June 23, 2017 – Electra Star Management signs a new client, Jina Song to a management deal!

Actress Jina Song was born in Chicago, Illinois. She is the third out of four children, who were born to two first generation South Korean parents who immigrated to America to provide a juncture for their family to flourish in the land of opportunities, also known to them as America. Her parents worked hard and expected to give her (and all four of their children) the hope and freedom to become any of what they thought would be the most respected profession. These professions in their minds were such jobs as a doctor, lawyer, engineer, etc…but Jina had other ideas…

Her parents planned to open a road early into ivy league schools by putting her in extra curricular activities, so they stuck her in violin lessons, and there, a performer was born. She began playing the violin at the tender age of 3. As her talents as a violinist grew, her desire to perform on stage started to grow as well. She began doing plays at age 5 and fell in love with acting. She played the violin for 15 years in orchestras that toured Europe, and acted on stage anytime the chance allowed.

Three months after graduating, she moved to Los Angeles to follow her dreams to become an actress, against her parents dreams.

She has appeared in international and many national commercials, and has booked roles on such movies as Adam Sandler’s “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry”. Early on in her career, she was the fit model for the feature film “Memoirs of a Geisha”, directed by Rob Marshall. Being on set every day to work on that beautiful movie blessed her with the opportunity for Rob Marshall himself to approach her and to offer her a small role. That was a pleasant surprise she did not see coming! She has booked roles on three different projects all directed by Michael Mann. Some of her other favorite roles she has been fortunate enough to play recently has been on such shows as NBC’s “Superstore”, and NBC’s “Bad Guys” as a series regular (pilot presentation). Because the creator of “Bad Guys” was a fan, as he started writing on another show, he created a role for her in an episode on TV Land’s “The Soul Man”, opposite Cedric The Entertainer.

Jina has also been pretty heavily involved in the improv world as of late. She is currently attending Upright Citizen’s Brigade (UCB), and has attended the Groundlings, among other reputable schools. She also performs improv with a troupe on a regular basis, so you can see her often on stage doing what she loves doing best. Performing and making people laugh!

She paints and designs jewelry in her free time. Her jewelry has been described as classy, with an edge. She will soon be launching a website where her jewelry can be purchased, so please stay tuned for all of her upcoming creative endeavors both on and off stage!

Today Electra Star Management client Ashley J releases her new single “Dare Ya”.

“”Dare Ya” is such a special song for me.” Ashley says.

I tend to write all of my music based off of current or past experiences in my life, and this song really tackled some feelings.

“Lyrically, I wrote the song based off of a compilation of text messages and letters I have received that really hit home for me, and motivated me to be the person that I am and want to be. So putting these feelings and words of wisdom into this song really gives homage to those I have it dedicated to. It has that “pick me-up edge” that makes you want to move and feel free. It’s a song that can be relatable or inspire anyone.”

Ashley J made the definitive switch from country to pop, after a trip with her parents to Los Angeles, where she met with President of Electra Star Group, Michael Blakey. Falling in love instantly with her music, Michael decided to bring her on board. As she says, she “landed in the best hands the music business has to offer” and signed her first recording contract. The song was written by Ashley J and produced by Michael Blakey.

The music video to “Dare Ya” is also expected soon.

Check AshleyJ.net for more details.

Interview with Michael Blakey

By Jeff Timmons

I had the honor of meeting Michael Blakey at his offices on Sunset and Doheny in Hollywood recently. Michael is an extraordinary success in the entertainment business, having started out as a musician and record producer, and eventually transitioned into a television and movie producer, and has now become an entertainment mogul. I caught up with Michael who was kind enough to give me a few minutes of his time to answer a few questions.

Jeff Timmons for TheCelebrityCafe.com:
Hey Michael!

Thanks for giving us a few minutes. We’ll jump right into it because I know your time is valuable.

Tell us how you got started in the music business, first as a musician, and then as a producer.

BgCn1oeCAAMk86M.jpg-largeMichael Blakey: It all started when I was about six years old, all I wanted to do was to play drums. My parents at that time refused to buy me a drum set, but eventually gave in after hearing me make horrible noises on my home made drums which were comprised of metal cookie cans and a garbage can. You can only imagine how bad that sounded! For my eighth birthday, my parents bought me a junior drum kit and that was the start of my musical career.

TCC: Your discography is mind-boggling. It spans 42 years, and features many genres, including comedy. I know there are many, but if you could pick one studio experience that had the most impact on you, which would it be?

MB: It’s frightening to hear 42 years in the industry, but please let me emphasize I was just a very, very young child when I got my first break which was basically more luck than skill. I have many interesting studio experiences but one of my best is, I was recording at A&M studios in LA and was listening back to a mix of one of the songs I had recorded earlier that day when the assistant engineer told me there was a person who wanted to come and take a listen to what has been going on in the studio that day. That person was none other than the legendary Paul McCartney.

TCC: What was your experience like touring with musical legends?

MB: I’ve been lucky enough to tour with numerous very successful and well-known artists. Each tour is completely different, you never know what’s going to happen on any given day. The most amazing thing about any tour is the insanely loud roar when the band walks out on stage. Being a musician that is asked to go on tour with any major band is an huge honor.

TCC: You were a record executive for awhile. What was that experience like?

MB: Very different to being a musician. Having been a artist, and later becoming a music industry executive, gave me a very unique perspective from both sides. Often times the artists demands are impossible to fulfill, but from the artist’s point of view would be very easy. I must say, I have really enjoyed being an executive, being able to be involved in both the recording company and artists careers is the best of both worlds.

TCC: When did you know it was time to branch out and explore TV and movie production?

MB: That’s a really good question. In mid 2000’s the music industry started to suffer. There was a tremendous amount of piracy, the evolvement of the digital platform and streaming technology damaged the sales on a massive scale. At the same time unscripted television started to take off, so I decided to look into alternate ways of utilizing my knowledge in the entertainment industry. After much trial and error, I was able to get into the production of television, which I enjoy very much.

TCC: Were there any projects that seemed like they would never pan out, but turned out to be a surprise?

MB: There have been a few projects that I have worked on where I wasn’t convinced were going to be hugely successful. Some of those turned into blockbusters! That quickly taught me to never stop pushing on a project because you never know how explosive it could turn out to be.

TCC: You are also a manager, and have started a model agency as well. Management is a tough, time consuming job. What made you decide to get into that?

MB: I enjoy being a manager more than anything. The fact that clients trust you with their careers makes for a huge responsibility and one that cannot be taken lightly. In order for me to take on client, I have to believe in their career in exactly the same manner as they do. I have been lucky enough to meet many people in powerful positions within the entertainment industry and therefor have been able to utilize my contacts to the benefit of my clients. I enjoy having the responsibility and it is very rewarding fighting for something on a clients behalf and then obtaining the deal!

The modeling agency is indeed a new in venture, it’s one I actually I don’t own myself, but is housed within our offices. I certainly lend a helping hand and hopefully am able to cross some of the talent into my own productions. It’s fun and exciting.

TCC: I know the modeling agency is fairly new. What has been the highlight of that division so far?

MB: As I said, I don’t actually operate it, but I do get to hear when one of their clients lands a big job. One of the models was just hired for a Pepsi commercial. I think that is as big as it gets!

TCC: I follow you on Instagram, and see you are an exotic car enthusiast. Do you ever feel like you’re living a dream?

MB: I most certainly feel blessed and yes, sometimes I do feel that I’m living the dream. But what you should know, is, I do work hard and put in many long hours. I have always believed that you get out of life what you put in; and it seems that I put in a lot!

TCC: Lastly, I know you have a million projects going on. I don’t know how you find the time or energy to do them all. What’s right around the corner for Michael Blakey, and where can we go to learn more about what you’re doing?

TCC: I do seem to have millions of projects going on all at once, however my concentration and priority is always my management company. Taking care of my clients careers comes first and my TV productions come second. My website http://www.electrastarmgmt.com is the best place to catch latest news and developments as well as see the roster of clients we have on board.

TCC:Thanks so much for taking the time!

TCC: Thank you.

Brides Against Breast Cancer™ (BABC) announced today that noted singer and songwriter Margo Rey has been named volunteer ambassador for the national  non-profit organization. Her hit, “Let the Rain,” a top 20 Billboard charting song, will become the theme song for a new BABC nationwide campaign.

“From my perspective as a breast cancer warrior now undergoing chemotherapy, I believe that education and personal support are just as critical as prompt medical treatment,” said Margo Rey. “It is my pleasure to join Brides Against Breast Cancer to raise awareness and help ensure that no one ever has to face cancer alone.”

In her role as ambassador, Margo Rey will visit select cities where Brides Against Breast Cancer www.bridesabc.org holds its “Original Nationwide Tour of Gowns” bridal shows, which raise money for education, information and outreach services to cancer patients and their families.  She is also looking forward to becoming a bride herself, planning a fall wedding to her partner for the last five years, famous comedian and actor Ron “Tater Salad” White.

“Margo Rey’s cancer journey will offer inspiration to so many people,” said Carl Ritter, chief executive officer for the Sarasota-based nonprofit. “She will spread hope and courage to thousands of families affected by cancer in her role as Ambassador.”

Rey’s alternative pop songs have captured a worldwide audience with their unforgettable melodies, groove oriented arrangements and enduring, socially conscious lyrics. Her biggest hit, “Let the Rain” – co-written with the legendary John Oates – remained on the charts for 21 weeks.  Rey’s newest single, “Tempted,” is presently in the Top 40 charts and currently being played on dozens of radio stations across the United States.

In keeping with Rey’s volunteer leadership, BABC is kicking off a new campaign this summer called simply, “I Do!”  As Amy Paulishak, vice president, said, “Those two words from all our future brides describe the response we hope to hear when we ask people to support our program, from donating funds, to performing self-breast exams and helping family members and friends facing this disease.”

This year, Brides Against Breast Cancer will host more than 120 bridal shows nationwide, and will contribute 2 million dollars to support free programs and services to help people impacted by cancer.  In addition, the nonprofit will distribute thousands of breast self-examination cards.

Brides Against Breast Cancer sells all brands of new designer and gently worn wedding gowns, with an average offering of nearly 1,000 dresses at each show. Gowns are available in sizes from 0 to 24, and layaway is available.  Gown prices start at $99 and range upwards to new name brand and couture gowns valued at $3,900 or more.

“Our organization makes it possible for future brides around the country to purchase wedding gowns at dramatic savings, as well as donate their own gowns,” said Paulishak.  “If you have already said, ‘I do,’ and want to donate your gown, a charitable tax deduction is available.”

Buy “Tempted” on iTunes:

Margo-Rey-Tempted Margo Rey is no stranger to chart success; from her last album release, ‘Habit’ (2012) which we reviewed here, the singles “Let the Rain” and “Between Us” charted in the top 20 in the Billboard AC. A caring Fish Pond family member, she stands out in my mind as a huge advocate of heart-led and natural music, and an inspiration to our global family. She has even gone to the trouble of creating her own genre, Organica, and the Organica Music Group, to make the point; that she recognizes the beauty of an art form that requires hard work, dedication, and a commitment to remain true to the music and to the self.

In what turns out to be a super choice of song, Margo releases her own twist on the classic 80′s Squeeze number, ‘Tempted’. Covers can be risky; with such a popular number (which I grew up with, and so I took the trouble to re-acquaint myself with it a couple of times before listening to Margo’s newest single), I was looking for a really excellent take on the original, which was so 80′s, so smooth, and so laid back.  I needed something with a punch, something ‘Margo’…and I got it. She has the voice and the ‘organica’ approach down to a tee, producing an upbeat and beautifully executed version, totally for our times, and funky as hell. Have a listen with me.

It’s a beautiful sunny day, lovely for music listening, and perfect for music reviewing; when it’s Margo, you can be pretty sure it’s going to be a pleasure. Straight in with that voice, it takes me right back to my first listen to ‘Habit’, a diverse album, with each song telling a story instrumentally and lyrically. The keyboard, the accented husky vocal, the runs, and the funky drumming; all a wonderful build up to what is to come. Let the groove commence.

“I said to my reflection

let’s get out of this place,

Past the church and the steeple

The laundry on the hill

The billboards and the buildings

Memories of it still”

It’s reminiscent of the more upbeat tracks on ‘Habit’; a bit ‘Get Back’, and a bit ’10 Reasons’, and clear that she owns the song from the very first verse.  Lyrically, it’s taking me right back to the 80′s and the original, but vocally and instrumentally, this version is an original, a swinging toe-tapper and shoulder shaker, with no doubt. The verse is nicely understated, something of a 3 a.m. listen at Ronnie Scott’s in Soho, London.  It makes that build into the chorus so welcome when it comes.

“Tempted by the fruit of another

Tempted but the truth is discovered

What’s been going on,

Now that you have gone,

There’s no other”

It has me genuinely, and broadly, smiling at this point, sitting in a Northern Virginia library and nodding my head, tapping my fingers on the MacBook (I think that’s what the empty space next to the trackpad is for). You can hear the hard work that’s gone into production to keep me listening and satisfied, the little harmonies and attention to detail in the mix of every track. It’s my compliment to Margo, honestly, that I started hearing the very faintest reflections of the seminal ‘Tom’s Diner’ by Suzanne Vega. I love it when a song has hints like that, and can spin you off into memories of other classic works.  It’s bringing on musical immersion  .

Another verse, another chorus, just as punchy, and it’s noteworthy to me that, as on ‘Habit’, the musicians and the band as an entity are so superbly tight, you don’t notice individual instruments unless you really listen out for them; it works as a piece of music, supporting the main feature, Margo’s vocal.

At just the right time, the song comes down to the bare bones again, highlighting the brilliant lyric of Al Turney:

“I bought a novel, some perfume

A fortune all for you

But it’s not my conscience

Hating to be untrue

I asked of my reflection

What is there to do?”

That lovely keyboard is back again, bringing the song to a swinging and jammin’ climax, soaring harmony vocals complementing; and another signature ‘Margo’ touch, with the briefest of warning notes, the song closes. It’s a super snappy ending to a track that had me wanting to dance along to it all the way.

From my perspective, this deserves all the credit it is currently getting. Margo is not a one-hit sensation; she is a proven phenomenon, musically well-educated, hard working, a principled artist, no stranger to adversity, and a believer in the quality of real music. This is a lovely memory of my childhood, it pays homage to the original, and at the same time it is a fresh new work of art and an excellent follow up to the epic (13 songs worth) ‘Habit’ in 2012. I look forward to seeing where sales go from here.  I expect to be looking up to follow its path.

I suppose the general public agrees. Debuting at number 28 on the Billboard AC, Margo has once again put her unique stamp on a track which I’m sure is set to run and run. Margo, your Fish Pond family are proud of you, and with you all the way to the top.

Margo Rey’s “Between Us” is #20 on the National Mediabase Mainstream Adult Contemporary Chart!

Her previous single, “Let The Rain”, co-written by Ms. Rey and the legendary John Oates, remained on the charts for an astonishing 21 weeks, making it a “Hot Shot Debut” on Billboard Mainstream AC Charts as well as earning her kudos in “Billboard” magazine’s “Bubble Under” column.

On July 10th Margo Rey’s new album “Habit” was released by Organica Music. You can buy it here

ESM’s artist Margo Rey has just released her highly anticipated CD, “Habit”. The album features Margo’s new smash single, “Between Us” as well as her chart-topping hit, “Let the Rain.” The latter, co-written by Ms. Rey and the legendary John Oates, remained on the charts for an astonishing 21 weeks, making it a “Hot Shot Debut” on Billboard Mainstream AC Charts as well as earning her kudos in “Billboard” magazine’s “Bubble Under” column. The duo also teamed up on the stunning cut, “Saturn Returns.” Oates sings on both tracks and he provides an ideal complement to Rey’s powerful yet nuanced vocals. Listeners closest to it claim that “Habit” is its own brand of sonic luxury and Rey emerges as a force of nature — in heels no less.

Margo has a diverse and loyal fan base and, given her track record, her following is understandable. In less than a two-year span she has delivered five hits in diverse genres that include Adult Contemporary as well as Dance and Pop. She also charted two #1 Dance hits and, if that’s not enough, Rey also generated an original Christmas hit.

Reflecting on the direction of “Habit,” Margo explains: “I wanted something ‘lo-fi’ as opposed to the cloned sounds of today’s pop culture environment. I needed my music to sound like me rather than the equipment it was recorded on. Plus, I feel a huge affinity — love affair even — for the singer/songwriter era of the seventies and eighties.” Ms. Rey employed a technique as simple as it is novel in today’s recording environment. She gathered extraordinary musicians in a room and they recorded (equally extraordinary) music together. If that doesn’t sound radical, it should — and “Habit” underscores the point. It’s a CD that never leaves the human vibe behind. It revels in it and, if anything, deepens it.

Margo has produced a collection of songs that reverberates with a gamut of emotions. Greed, love, lust, doubt, remorse, obsession and crazed vulnerability are all present — in abundance. “I hope listeners respond to the penetrating pulse in each of these songs. They’re an exploration of my contradictory feelings over the past two years. Roll all of those emotional tangents into a set list and you have, well, something that I hope will become a “Habit.”

The album unleashes thirteen songs, all of which are original. One exception is a gorgeous cover of The Zombie’s hit, “She’s Not There.” If you think you’ve heard the song before, think again. This version has more down-under burn than most people can handle. But it gets better. Ms. Rey will be on tour. So hang on. Or, better yet, let yourself go. www.MargoRey.com

“Habit” was recorded and mixed at Rusk LA by Elton Ahi, mastered by Yossi Shaked, produced and arranged by Margo Rey in collaboration with Elton Ahi and Chris Wabich. Ron White and Michael Blakey are Executive Producers of the album and partners in OMG.

Los Angeles, CA: Michael Blakey, President of Electra Star Management and the Organica Music Group today announced the signing of Recycled Percussion to a management agreement with the Los Angeles based entertainment company.

Recycled Percussion is a four member group that began in 1995 when founding member Justin Spencer was looking for a way to be unusually creative for his high school talent show.  He took the idea of playing buckets (which he discovered in the subways of NYC) and added more and more instruments to the original formation to create a unique sound. Soon, the band took off, appearing on the cover of USA Today, winning numerous awards and playing over 250 shows a year.

The group continued to tour for over ten years and until they made their national debut on the television show “America’s Got Talent.” It was there that Recycled Percussion became a household name, finishing second runner up in the competition and becoming the highest placed non singing act to ever compete in the program’s history. The group went on to develop a live version of their show with Jerry Springer and spent three months performing at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas before signing a deal with the MGM Grand to have their own show at the famed casino.

Today, Recycled Percussion (who are made up of members Justin Spencer, Ryan Vezina, Todd Griffin and Matt Bowman) have created the most interactive show in Las Vegas, presenting each audience member with a drumstick and unique instrument which they can use to play along with the band throughout the show which is now housed at The Tropicana Hotel’s Tiffany Theatre. The group has appeared on America’s Got Talent and China’s Got Talent as well as the 2010 Latin Grammy Awards, the World MMA Awards and numerous NBA and NFL halftime shows.

In making the announcement, Blakey states: “I am proud to welcome Recycled Percussion to the Electra Star Management family and believe that together, we will create another successful chapter for the group.”

Adds Justin Spencer, Recycled Percussion’s Founder and Creative Force: “Recycled Percussion is very focused on bringing our group in the right direction. With the addition of Electra Star Management and the experience they have, we feel our group and its brand that we have worked so hard on, is in great hands. We look forward to the relationship that has now been forged and believe it will continue to let us grow as artists, ultimately resulting in a better product onstage for our loyal fans.”
